Why AI sentiment matters for your brand

Counting mentions is easy. Counting good mentions is the work. When an AI engine says "Lumos is fast and LatAm-focused but newer than incumbents", that mention shows up as a +1 in any monitoring tool. But the second clause is the one your buyer remembers. The qualifier travels with the mention.

AI engines rarely describe brands without qualification. They were trained on long-form text โ€” reviews, comparison posts, Reddit threads โ€” where balance is the default. So almost every mention carries an implicit tone. Sentiment monitoring is how you read that tone, theme by theme, engine by engine.

Common AI sentiment mistakes

Reading the average instead of the themes. "62% positive" sounds great until you see that the negative tail is dominated by a single theme that is costing you deals.

Ignoring engine differences. ChatGPT and Claude often agree. Perplexity and Gemini diverge because they ground on different web sources. A theme that is invisible to ChatGPT but loud in Perplexity tells you which web surface is driving the narrative.

Reacting to one negative mention. AI engines hallucinate occasionally. A single negative sample is not a signal. A theme โ€” the same phrase appearing across dozens of prompts and engines โ€” is.

Trying to silence negative themes. You cannot argue an AI engine out of a theme by removing the source. Instead, outweigh it: publish stronger, fresher counter-content.

Why does AI sentiment matter, not just mention count?

Being mentioned by ChatGPT is good. Being mentioned with 'X is great but expensive for small teams' is half a sale lost. AI engines rarely mention brands without context โ€” the qualifier travels with the mention into the buyer's head. Sentiment surfaces the qualifier.

How is sentiment measured?

For each prompt we run, we extract the segment that mentions your brand and classify the surrounding language as positive, neutral, or negative. Aggregated across dozens of prompts, this gives a per-engine sentiment profile that's more meaningful than a single binary label.

What are 'themes' in the output?

Themes are the recurring phrases AI engines use to describe you โ€” words like 'fast', 'expensive for small teams', 'great keyboard shortcuts'. They're the language your buyers are absorbing about you. Often a few specific themes drive the whole sentiment picture.
