Why the gap is more useful than the list

Knowing the top domains that cite you is interesting. Knowing the top domains that cite your competitors but not you is actionable. The Lumos Citation Gap Finder is built around that flip โ€” instead of optimizing what you already have, it points at the publications most likely to land a fresh story about you, because their editors and AI's grounding both already associate them with your category.

The math is simple. For every domain in the citation graph, we compute: citations to competitors minus citations to you. A domain that cites a competitor 14 times in the last 90 days and you zero times is a 14-citation gap. The bigger the gap, the bigger the leverage in closing it. Twenty minutes of looking at the right gap list usually produces a clearer Q3 PR plan than a month of brainstorming.

What you see inside Lumos

The preview above is the Lumos vs competitors gap this quarter โ€” publications citing other GEO platforms heavily and Lumos zero. Signing up runs the same view on your brand against your configured competitors.

  • Ranked gap list. Top domains where the gap is largest. Each row shows the domain, citations to each competitor, citations to you, and the resulting gap score.
  • Gap velocity. Whether the gap is widening week over week (urgent โ€” a competitor is winning fresh coverage) or stable (long-term, lower urgency).
  • Driving prompts. Each gap is linked to the specific prompts where the competitor is cited. Knowing that TechCrunch cites Profound a lot is useful; knowing TechCrunch cites Profound on the prompt "enterprise GEO platform" specifically tells you which story angle works.
  • Warmth indicators. Lumos surfaces domains where you already have a hook โ€” a prior mention, a writer following you on LinkedIn, a press release picked up. These are the warm gaps to pitch first.

How Lumos generates the gap

The gap analysis runs on top of the citation graph. Each week:

  1. Lumos runs your prompt library against ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity.
  2. For every answer, we extract the cited domains (visible sources, inline citations, and grounded retrievals).
  3. We do the same for each competitor you've configured.
  4. We compute the per-domain gap score: max(competitor citations) โˆ’ your citations.
  5. We rank the result and tag each row with engine coverage, recency, and gap velocity.

You can also upload custom prompts that map to specific stories you want covered. For example: if you have a new pricing page and you want PR coverage for it, add the prompt "best [category] pricing 2026" โ€” the gap finder will then tell you exactly which publications are already covering that pricing conversation for competitors.

How to use the gap list

As a quarterly PR plan. Take the top 10 gaps. Score them by warmth (existing relationships, prior mentions) and freshness (last covered your category in the past 30 days). Pitch the top 3-5. We've seen brands land 2-3 placements per quarter from this workflow alone.

As an internal alignment tool. Show the gap list to founders, sales, and content. Everyone agrees faster when the priority list is generated from data instead of opinion.

As a competitor intelligence feed. When a new domain shows up in the gap list because a competitor just landed coverage there, you have 7-14 days before AI engines fully reweight their grounding. Reach out to the same writer with a counter-story or a different angle. Speed compounds.

As a content map. Some gaps can't be closed with PR โ€” the publication just doesn't cover newcomers. In those cases, the gap tells you what kind of story the AI category already accepts. Build content matching that shape on your own domain; AI engines will find it and start grounding on it.

Common mistakes when reading the gap

Chasing the biggest gap first. The biggest gap is usually a publication that covered a competitor extensively because of a specific event (funding round, acquisition). You can't replicate the event. The right gap to pitch is the second tier โ€” publications with a real gap that also have a track record of covering newcomers in your category.

Confusing citation gap with backlink gap. They're related but not the same. A high-DR domain that doesn't actually surface in AI citations is a poor PR target for GEO purposes โ€” its links pass authority but its content isn't being read by the engines. Lumos's gap finder uses citation data, not link data.

Tracking too many competitors. If you track 20 competitors, the gap list becomes a wishlist of every publication that has ever covered anyone in your space. Stick to 3-5 competitors AI engines already group you with โ€” the gap then becomes a focused, actionable list.

Ignoring engine coverage. A domain heavily cited only in Perplexity (and ignored by ChatGPT) is a less attractive gap than one cited across all four engines. Lumos shows engine coverage per domain.

FAQ

What is a citation gap?

A citation gap is a domain that cites one or more of your competitors when AI engines answer category questions, but does not cite you. The bigger the gap (citations to competitors minus citations to you), the more leverage in closing it. A domain that cites a competitor 14 times in the last 90 days and you zero times is a high-priority PR target.

How does Lumos find citation gaps?

Lumos runs the same prompt library against your brand and against each competitor you configure. For every prompt, we extract the cited domains. We then compute the per-domain delta: citations to competitors minus citations to you. The result is a ranked list of domains where the gap is largest. It's regenerated weekly as the citation graph shifts.

What's the right number of competitors to track?

Start with the three to five competitors AI engines already group you with โ€” usually the ones that show up in the same comparison answers. Tracking too many dilutes the signal; tracking too few misses category-wide gaps. Lumos shows you which competitors AI co-cites with you so you can pick the right set.

What do I do with the gap list?

Pitch it. The top citation gap domains are the publications most likely to land a story about you fast because their editors and AI's grounding both already associate them with your category. The typical workflow: take the top 10, score them by warmth (existing relationships) and freshness (last covered the category < 30 days), and pitch the top 3-5.

How is the full Lumos gap finder different from this demo?

The demo shows the Lumos vs competitors gap for our own brand. Signing up runs the same gap analysis on your brand against your competitors, tracks new gaps as they open or close week over week, and links each gap to the prompts where the competitor is cited so you can see why.
