What the AI site audit checks

AI search engines โ€” ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews โ€” don't read your site the way Google Search does. They rely on a different set of signals: structured data, crawler permissions, content clarity, and explicit machine-readable hints. Most standard SEO audits miss these entirely.

The Lumos free site audit covers four areas that directly affect AI visibility:

1. AI crawler access. Which bots can read your pages, and which are blocked? We check your robots.txt, HTTP headers, and meta-tag directives for the major AI crawlers: GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, and others. Pages that block these bots won't appear in AI answers, regardless of how well they rank on Google.

2. Page citability scores. For each sampled page, we score how likely an AI engine is to cite it when answering a relevant query. Citability depends on content structure (clear H1, logical hierarchy), evidence density (specific claims, statistics, named sources), and format signals (definitions, lists, Q&A blocks). Pages below 50/100 rarely appear in AI-generated answers.

3. Schema.org markup gaps. AI engines use structured data to understand entities โ€” your company, products, authors, FAQs, and more. We check whether your key pages carry the right schema types and flag missing or malformed markup that causes AI engines to skip structured context about your brand.

4. Content gaps vs AI answers. We compare pages that appear in your Google Search Console data against what AI engines are actually citing. Pages with strong Google rankings but zero AI mentions have a gap โ€” usually a fixable one. The audit surfaces these gaps and ranks them by opportunity.

How the audit works

The process is three steps.

  1. Paste your URL. Enter your full domain (e.g., yourbrand.com). You don't need to authenticate or install anything. The audit starts immediately.

  2. Wait for the report. Lumos's crawler fetches your homepage and samples up to 50 pages (more for paying customers). It runs each page through citability scoring, crawler-access checks, schema validation, and the AI gap model. This takes 30โ€“90 seconds.

  3. Read the prioritized results. The report organizes findings into Critical, High, Medium, and Informational issues. Critical issues โ€” like blocking GPTBot in robots.txt โ€” are ones that prevent AI citation entirely. High-priority issues include missing schema on key pages and citability scores below 40. Medium issues are optimization opportunities. The report tells you exactly which pages are affected and what to change.

How to use the audit results

Start with Critical issues. If GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or Google-Extended is blocked, fix that first. Check your robots.txt Disallow rules and your server's X-Robots-Tag headers. A blocked crawler cannot cite you โ€” this is the single highest-ROI fix in AI visibility.

Then fix schema gaps. Missing Organization, Product, or FAQPage schema means AI engines have to guess context about your brand. Adding correct JSON-LD schema to your key pages is a one-time change with compounding returns โ€” once the schema is there, every AI crawl benefits.

Then improve citability on high-value pages. Sort your pages by two signals: Google traffic (from GSC) and citability score (from the audit). Pages with high Google traffic but low citability scores are your best optimization targets โ€” they attract human visitors but lose the AI answer slot. Improving those pages (clearer structure, more specific claims, Q&A format) moves them into AI answers.

Finally, address content gaps. If competitors appear in AI answers for prompts where you should rank, the audit flags those gaps. Each gap points to a content change: adding a clearer definition, publishing a comparison, or strengthening your authority signal on that topic.

Lumos benchmark: brands that fix the top three audit issues within 30 days see an average +41% improvement in AI citations. The audit gives you the exact list โ€” the work is in the fixing.

What happens after the free audit

The free audit samples up to 50 pages and runs once. If you want continuous monitoring โ€” weekly re-crawls, new-page detection, competitor comparison, and alerts when your AI visibility drops โ€” that's what Lumos's paid platform provides.

You can also connect Google Search Console directly in Lumos to automate the gap analysis: instead of manually comparing GSC data, Lumos does it every week and flags pages whose Google rank improved while their AI citation rate dropped (a signal that AI engines are deprioritizing the page).

The free audit is the starting point. Run it, fix the top issues, and then decide whether weekly monitoring makes sense for your brand.

FAQ

What does the free site audit check?

The audit covers four areas: AI crawler access (which bots can read your site and which are blocked), page-level citability scores (how likely AI engines are to cite each page), schema.org markup gaps (missing structured data that AI engines rely on), and content gaps (pages that rank on Google but are absent from AI answers).

How long does the audit take?

Most audits complete in 30โ€“90 seconds. For large sites (1,000+ pages), the free audit samples your top pages; paying customers get full-crawl reports.

Do I need to create an account?

No signup is required to run the free audit. You paste a URL, the report generates, and you can download or share it immediately.

What should I do with the audit results?

Start with the issues marked Critical โ€” these are blocking AI crawlers or causing AI engines to skip your pages entirely. Then work through High-priority fixes like missing schema and thin content before tackling Medium items like keyword gaps. The report prioritizes for you.

Is this the same as a technical SEO audit?

It overlaps but goes further. Traditional SEO audits focus on Google crawlability, page speed, and keywords. This audit adds AI-specific checks: llms.txt presence, AI crawler headers, citability scoring, and AI answer gap analysis โ€” signals that matter for ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity but not in standard SEO tools.
